Volkswagen’s R division will be making a transformation, into an independent entity within the broader Volkswagen Group and focusing entirely on electric vehicles (EVs). This strategic shift comes as part of Volkswagen’s broader commitment to electrification and follows the successful model of Cupra, which evolved from a sub-brand of Seat to a standalone performance marque.

The journey towards independence for Volkswagen’s R division commences with the establishment of a dedicated R space at the prestigious Autostadt, located in Wolfsburg, Germany—a facility owned by the Volkswagen Group and renowned as a popular tourist destination. This move underscores Volkswagen’s dedication to positioning the R division as a distinct and prominent presence within its portfolio.

Reinhold Ivenz, Head of Volkswagen R, emphasized the brand’s evolution, stating that the establishment of their pavilion at Autostadt marks a crucial step in enhancing their visibility as a performance brand. Additionally, it serves as a platform to provide enthusiasts with exclusive insights into upcoming concept cars and cutting-edge technologies, further enriching the R customer experience.

The timing of this development coincides with the anticipation surrounding Volkswagen R’s inaugural electric concept, slated for unveiling this year. The new pavilion at Autostadt is poised to serve as an ideal venue for this milestone, offering enthusiasts a firsthand look at the future direction of the performance brand. While the concept’s debut is imminent, the production-ready model is expected to follow in the subsequent two years.

Beyond showcasing vehicles, the Volkswagen R pavilion at Autostadt will host dynamic exhibitions, community events, and technical discussions, fostering a vibrant and engaging environment for enthusiasts. From performance exhibitions to ‘Friends of R’ gatherings and driving simulators for gaming enthusiasts, the pavilion aims to cater to a diverse range of interests while solidifying the brand’s distinct identity.

This move towards independence echoes Volkswagen’s demonstrated capability in developing compelling electric performance vehicles, exemplified by recent releases such as the ID.3 GTX hot hatch and the ID. Buzz GTX. Leveraging this expertise, Volkswagen R is poised to deliver electrifying performance with future models, building upon its legacy of iconic vehicles such as the Golf R and Touareg R.

Established in 2002 with the unveiling of the Golf 4 R32, the Volkswagen R brand has since expanded its lineup to include various models renowned for their performance and innovation. With this transition towards electric mobility, Volkswagen R is set to redefine performance driving for a new era, promising thrilling experiences while championing sustainability.
