Stellantis, one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, has launched a groundbreaking business unit, Charging & Energy, to address the growing concerns surrounding EV charging. By introducing the Free2move Charge platform, Stellantis aims to alleviate charging anxiety by providing customers access to an extensive network of more than 500,000 charging points across Europe through partnerships. As part of their strategic expansion, Stellantis is actively evaluating Tesla’s charging standard while exploring potential collaborations with energy companies, retailers, hardware manufacturers, and utilities.

Meeting the Growing EV Demand through Free2move Charge’s European Expansion

Stellantis’ Free2move Charge service is set to launch in Europe and North America in 2023, with the aim of facilitating hassle-free charging for EV owners. The company recognizes the existing challenges posed by an inadequate charging network in the industry, which has led to widespread “charging anxiety” among EV drivers. By the end of this year, Stellantis plans to provide seamless access to an extensive network of over 500,000 charging points in Europe through partnerships with various stakeholders. This significant expansion aims to address the concerns of EV owners and make the transition to electric vehicles more convenient and accessible.

Evaluation of Tesla’s Charging Standard

While Stellantis remains committed to enhancing the EV charging experience, the company is still evaluating Tesla’s charging standard, which has gained adoption by major rivals like Ford and General Motors in North America. The evaluation process will help Stellantis make informed decisions regarding charging infrastructure compatibility, ultimately benefiting EV drivers by providing greater convenience and flexibility. Ricardo Stamatti, Senior Vice President of the Charging & Energy Business Unit, expressed optimism about future discussions on this matter.

Charging Beyond Energy to Unlock New Business Opportunities

Stellantis recognizes that charging infrastructure presents an opportunity for diversification and revenue generation. In addition to energy provision, the company envisions charging points as more than just power sources. It foresees the potential for advertising, retail, and media consumption activities during the charging process. By capitalizing on these ancillary services, Stellantis aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem that enhances the overall EV ownership experience. This innovative approach opens up new avenues for partnerships and collaborations within the evolving EV industry.

The Free2move Charge ecosystem goes beyond offering access to charging points. Stellantis plans to provide support for the installation of home charging facilities for private customers of its renowned brands, such as Jeep, Ram, Peugeot, Fiat, and Opel. Furthermore, Stellantis intends to establish partnerships with various entities, including energy companies, retailers, hardware manufacturers, and utilities. These collaborations will contribute to the expansion of public charging networks in North America, Europe, and other regions, which will be announced at a later date. The company plans to reveal more information throughout 2023, including financial targets for the Charging & Energy Business Unit.
