BMW is preparing to introduce the 2024 BMW M5 Touring, marking the return of the high-performance wagon after a hiatus of over a decade. Initially, it was thought that the M5 Touring would be available exclusively for European customers. While concrete visuals of the super-wagon have not been unveiled yet, initial preview images shared by BMW suggest that the vehicle will possess distinctive features that make it easily recognizable, and further details hint that it could come to the USA.

Some design elements can already be identified, indicating a more aggressive and muscular appearance compared to the recently unveiled next-generation 5 Series in May 2023. The rear end of the M5 Touring is characterized by a roof-mounted spoiler and quad exhaust outlets integrated into what appears to be a substantial diffuser. Furthermore, the visible size of the brake rotors through the wheels hints at the substantial power that lies beneath.

Rumors say the M5 Touring will incorporate some form of electrification. However, specifics regarding the powertrain remain undisclosed, leaving enthusiasts eager for more information. BMW has disclosed that the Touring model will share a “completely newly-developed [and] partially electrified drive system” with the next-generation M5 sedan.

According to an unverified report through our friends at BMWBlog, this plug-in hybrid drivetrain is rumored to get a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine internally referred to as the S68, an electric motor, and an M-tuned version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Although nothing is confirmed, the report suggests that the M5 Touring could generate 718 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, surpassing the current M5’s figures of 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

Additional details about the forthcoming M5 Touring are expected to be released by BMW in the following months, with the official unveiling of the wagon slated to occur before the end of 2024. It remains uncertain if the M5 Touring will be offered in the United States to compete against rivals such as the Audi RS6 Avant and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon. In the meantime, BMW plans to commence road and track testing of their new high-performance wagon, including trials at the iconic Nürburgring racetrack. Wagon lovers may have a reason to rejoice here in the USA. We shall see!
