Renault-owned and French sports car maker Alpine has recently unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its model lineup and enter mainstream segments, marking a significant shift in its 68-year history. Over the next decade, the renowned sub-brand intends to release a total of seven new cars, some of which will be available for purchase in the United States.

The expansion of Alpine’s range is scheduled to commence in 2024, with the initial focus on European markets. However, the brand’s foray into overseas territories, including the United States, is slated to begin in 2027. The first model to be introduced will be a unique version of the forthcoming Renault 5 hatchback, christened the A290. This high-performance hatchback, which was previewed by a concept earlier this year, will ride on the modular CMFB-EV platform and exclusively feature an electric powertrain.

Following the A290’s launch in 2025, Alpine will introduce its inaugural crossover aimed at Europe’s competitive C-segment market. This crossover will directly contend with popular models like the BMW X2 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Subsequently, by the end of 2026, Alpine plans to debut the successor to its acclaimed A110 sports car, now powered by electricity. Additionally, the modular platform utilized by the A110 will serve as the foundation for an A110-based convertible and a four-seater coupe that revives the iconic A310 name. The final phase of Alpine’s strategy will commence in 2027, featuring two models positioned in the D and E segments, respectively. While specific details about these vehicles have not been disclosed, it is widely speculated that they will be crossover models, rather than a large sports sedan. If these assumptions are accurate, the D-segment model will likely rival the Porsche Macan, while the E-segment crossover will compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne. Alpine considers these yet-to-be-named crossovers as instrumental in establishing a firm foothold in the American market.

In 2021, Alpine underwent a significant transformation, transitioning into a standalone business entity. This pivotal year not only marked the emergence of Alpine as an independent brand but also witnessed its entry into the prestigious world of Formula 1, where it replaced Renault. Building upon its F1 venture, Alpine aims to leverage the exposure gained from the pinnacle of motorsport as it sets its sights on expansion into new territories, particularly the United States and potentially China. These two markets have witnessed a notable surge in the popularity of Formula 1, making them attractive prospects for Alpine’s growth strategy.

In addition to its involvement in Formula 1, Alpine also competes in the highly regarded World Endurance Championship (WEC). Looking ahead, Alpine has exciting plans for the championship, as starting from the upcoming year, it will introduce an LMDh race car in the esteemed Hypercar class. This move demonstrates Alpine’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and competitiveness in endurance racing.

While Alpine’s primary focus lies in the electrification of its lineup, driven in part by impending European regulations banning the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars by 2035, the brand remains open to exploring alternative powertrain technologies. Notably, Alpine is actively developing a “hydrogen internal combustion engine,” although specific details about this innovation have not yet been divulged. Similarly, the specifics regarding Alpine’s sales strategy in the United States remain somewhat unclear. However, it has been previously reported that the company has entered into a distribution agreement with AutoNation, a retailer based in Florida.
