Next-Generation Apple CarPlay Poised to Control More & Revolutionize Vehicle Displays

Apple’s latest version of CarPlay is set to bring a significant transformation, with capabilities extending beyond initial expectations. This new generation will not only feature a customizable design interface but also take over all vehicle displays, including the digital gauge cluster.

Customizable Design Interface

One of the standout features of the next-gen CarPlay is its highly customizable design interface. This allows automakers to tailor the look and feel to match their brand identity. For instance, it would seem unusual for a budget-friendly Mazda to share the same user interface (UI) as a high-end Porsche 911. With this customizable approach, CarPlay can offer a unique experience across different vehicle brands while maintaining consistent functionality and an intuitive layout.

Integration with All Vehicle Displays

Apple has confirmed that the new CarPlay will be visible on all vehicle displays, marking a significant upgrade from the current system. This includes taking over the digital gauge cluster, providing a unified and immersive user experience. During the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference 2024, more images and details were shared, highlighting the comprehensive integration of CarPlay into vehicle systems.

Configurable Design Interface

In a detailed developer video, Human Interface Designer Ben Crick explained that the new layout is adaptable to various vehicle drivetrains. This is crucial as the new CarPlay will manage not just infotainment screens but also essential displays like the digital gauge cluster. Crick emphasized the ability for automakers to “express your own visual philosophy within CarPlay,” allowing for a distinctive look that aligns with their brand’s identity. This co-branded experience will make CarPlay unique yet harmonious with the vehicle’s overall design.

Adoption by Leading Brands

Porsche and Aston Martin are among the first brands expected to integrate the new CarPlay interface. This system will control all available vehicle screens, including the digital gauge cluster and even the passenger display. Despite its extensive capabilities, CarPlay will still require an iPhone and will not function as a standalone operating system.

The rollout of the new CarPlay has not been without controversy. Earlier this year, the Department of Justice filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against Apple. The lawsuit alleges that Apple has coerced automakers into adopting CarPlay by requiring it to control all screens, sensors, and gauges in a car, thereby creating an iPhone-centric driving experience. While the new CarPlay offers numerous improvements, its acceptance and popularity among users remain to be seen once it becomes widely available.
