Volkswagen is poised and ready to reintroduce a van to the U.S. market with the arrival of the ID. Buzz in 2025, but its European division has consistently had vans available. The essence of the original Bus continues in the Transporter, and Volkswagen has recently previewed the seventh-generation model of this iconic vehicle.
Known informally as the T7, this next-generation Transporter is designed to be a more robust option compared to the electric ID. Buzz and the more car-like Multivan that debuted in 2021. While a detailed view of the T7’s design is not yet available, a teaser sketch from Volkswagen reveals that the van’s overall proportions remain familiar, maintaining its recognizable Transporter identity. Though not as retro-styled as the ID. Buzz, the T7 will feature design elements inspired by its predecessors, particularly the grille, which echoes the T5 model.
Volkswagen plans to offer the T7 in various configurations, including at least two different wheelbase lengths. The shortest version will be approximately 199 inches long, while the longest will extend to about 216 inches. Customers will have a selection of wheel designs ranging from 16 to 19 inches and can choose between a large hatch or side-hinged rear doors.
Although specific technical details are still under wraps, it’s anticipated that front-wheel drive will be standard, as it has been since the fourth-generation Transporter (known briefly as the EuroVan in the U.S.) debuted in 1990. Additionally, 4Motion all-wheel drive is likely to be available as an option. The powertrain lineup is expected to include diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants, with more information to be released closer to the T7’s launch.
Volkswagen has already begun accepting orders for the T7 in Germany, where it starts at €36,780 (approximately $39,900). Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025. However, there is currently no indication that this model will be available in the United States.
