The U.S. auto safety regulator announced it is opening a recall inquiry into roughly 51,500 Volkswagen electric vehicles (EVs) due to concerns that the doors might unexpectedly open while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported receiving 12 complaints regarding Volkswagen’s ID.4 SUVs, which were produced between 2021 and 2023.
Some drivers have experienced the vehicle’s doors intermittently opening without any detectable cause, although there have been no reported injuries or fatalities linked to this problem. The NHTSA’s investigation will also review the effectiveness of prior recalls by Volkswagen that aimed to resolve water seepage issues in the same vehicles, to ensure those fixes were successful.
