CES 2024: Volkswagen Integrates ChatGPT AI into New Vehicles

Volkswagen is set to revolutionize the driving experience by integrating ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, into its IDA voice assistant. This groundbreaking functionality is being presented in collaboration with technology partner Cerence at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The integration of ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant enables seamless access to a continuously expanding artificial intelligence database, allowing drivers to have researched content read out to them while driving.

Cerence Chat Pro, developed by technology partner Cerence Inc., serves as the foundation for this automotive-grade ChatGPT integration. Volkswagen is taking the lead as the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature, starting in the second quarter of 2024 in numerous production vehicles. The integration will be available in models such as ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf.

The integration of ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant brings a host of new capabilities beyond traditional voice control. Users can control infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even seek answers to general knowledge questions. The AI, continually expanding its capabilities, can provide additional information, enriching conversations, answering queries, and offering vehicle-specific information, all hands-free.

Importantly, there is no need for users to create a new account, install a new app, or activate ChatGPT separately. The voice assistant is effortlessly activated with a simple “Hello IDA” or by pressing the button on the steering wheel. IDA prioritizes tasks automatically, whether it involves executing a vehicle function, searching for a destination, or adjusting the temperature. If the Volkswagen system cannot answer a request, it is seamlessly forwarded to AI, and the familiar Volkswagen voice responds.

Crucially, the integration prioritizes user privacy and data protection. ChatGPT does not access any vehicle data, and questions and answers are immediately deleted. Cerence Chat Pro, leveraging various sources, ensures IDA provides relevant responses while prioritizing security and integration with IDA’s numerous capabilities.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, emphasized Volkswagen’s commitment to democratizing technology and making innovations accessible to all. The seamless integration of ChatGPT exemplifies this commitment, offering drivers added value and direct access to an AI-based research tool.

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expressed pride in building on the longstanding partnership with Volkswagen. With Cerence Chat Pro, the collaboration provides an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration that prioritizes flexibility, customization, security, and ease of deployment. The companies are also exploring future collaborations to design a new, large language model-based user experience for Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant. The integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen vehicles represents a significant leap forward in automotive AI technology, promising enhanced user experiences and innovative driving solutions.
