We know it’s April first and a part of us feels like Toyota is pulling the ultimate April Fool’s joke on us with the introduction of a new Toyota GR Corolla hatchback that packs 300 horsepower, a 6-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel-drive.
As it turns out, the new 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is legit, in more ways than one considering it is coming to America touting its 1.6-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine good for 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque with three exhaust outlets. Toyota just scored some respect points from us today, especially considering a time when crossover utility vehicles are taking over the performance landscape when it comes to “affordable” fun – it’s refreshing to see Toyota step up to the plate to give us a hot hatchback.

TO fit the proper form of a modern-day pocket rocket, the new Toyota GR Corolla tips the scale at just 3,249 pounds, forged carbon fiber roof, 18-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, a bulging hood and wider finders over the normal Corolla Hatchback, an all-wheel-drive system that can split torque from 60/40 front-rear or a 50/50 split… or a 30/70 for up to 70% of the power sent to the rear wheels, and a unique 3-outlet exhaust. To handle the extra power and deliver it properly, the GR Corolla has a strengthened chassis over the normal Corolla Hatchback, four-piston brake calipers up front clamping down on slotted rotors, and the curb weight that’s actually about 200 pounds lighter than something like the new Volkswagen Golf R. There’s also the option of limited-slip differentials for the all-wheel-drive system.
To complete the package, the GR Corolla gets Toyota’s latest infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto fed through an 8-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a JBL 8-speaker sound system, heated front sports seats, automatic highbeam LED headlights, and a full array of the expected active safety features including adaptive cruise control.
Pricing for the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will be announced later this year just before it goes on sale in 2022. The kicker here is that the new Toyota GR C0rolla is said to be produced for only one year. Better act fast on this one!
