SUVs (sports utility vehicles) and CUVs (crossover utility vehicles) are the current in-thing and to keep the masses happy with their purchase of the latest and greatest SUV or CUV, manufacturers are expanding on the idea of making multipurpose vehicles or at least giving us such an illusion. Ford is one the get into the fray of giving consumers a little something extra in their new Ford Edge ST, a vehicle touted as a high-performance SUV and a new entrant for the Edge trims.

The differences in the new Ford Edge ST versus any other Edge resides with additional power from the well-praised 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that gives us 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, which is about 20 horsepower and 30 lb-ft of torque more than the “normal” V6-powered Edge trims. Moreover, there’s a newer 8-speed automatic transmission in place of the old 6-speed auto, which adds to the performance level. Overall, the new Edge ST is the best performing Edge ever created, which fits the mold of having “Ford Performance” written on the lower door sill plates.
Having experienced other trim levels of the Edge I can say that the ST is the one to get if you’re even a little bit of an enthusiast. It’s a vehicle that keeps everyone happy in the retrospect of having a little extra power yet still providing the family with the creature comforts and necessary space to enjoy on outings and long trips. Though, as you may expect, due to the large 21-inch wheels and firmer suspension, the Edge ST rides more of the stiff side and tends to ride a fine line of being overly harsh for long hauls. Still, the sportier suspension setup does well to keep the Edge ST more planted, but the heavier steering effort does nothing to translate the road surface, things still remain soulless and nothing in the realm of a true sports car.
Much of what the Edge ST offers is on the side of being a bit flashier and giving an owner the proper substance to brag a little at gatherings and dinner parties. “my SUV has 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, what’s yours got?” – that’s what you’re going to hear. The new Ford Edge ST is where the inner boy-racer meets a sensible parent who everyone looks to make the right choice for the family vehicle.
Is the new Ford Edge ST a sensible choice? Sure, if you’re willing to give up a bit of comfort for the sporty attitude then it’s a fine choice. I mean, look at it. It speaks volumes and backs it up with the proper performance all at a respectable price when you consider how much you will spend for any other SUV with equal or better performance with the long list of matching equipment.
My loaded Edge ST AWD test vehicle tests out at a price of $52,125 but can be had at a starting price of $43,000.
