It was an auspicious time in Southern France’s Aix-en-Provence region to cover the global release of Rolls-Royce’s latest set of imperial automobiles, the new Ghost Series II and Black Badge Ghost Series II. The drive experience during the 4-day getaway was compelling since Rolls-Royce leadership provided intimate details on the Ghost’s origin story and illustrious reputation.

As you can imagine, Ghost Series II is technologically progressive due to detailed product planning and modern design techniques. It enters the reinvention phase as the most successful model in the British marque’s storied history. Currently representing the fleet in advancements, Ghost connoisseurs will appreciate the updated 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine distributing 563 British horses (591-horsepower for Black Badge), a new illuminated Pantheon grille and headlight graphics, a Spirit of Ecstasy Clock Cabinet,  upgraded 1,400-watt, 18-speaker Rolls-Royce Bespoke Audio, Grey-Stained Ash and Duality Twill finishes, and enrichment to the Planar Suspension System to allow the 5,629-pound Ghost to glide with ease.

Ghost Series II Lifestyle

Onsite at Château La Coste, centered within the harmony of rolling Provençal hills, lush vineyards, natural beauty, and architectural sculptures created by English artist Damien Steven Hirst, I gained profound insight into the Goodwood automaker’s Bespoke programs, luxury luggage collections, lifestyle values, and the future talent program consisting of over 100 apprentices and 90 interns. At least 70% of graduates currently work for the company in Goodwood, England. When you purchase a Ghost Series II, you perpetually become a part of the extended family.

The Ghost Series II and its lifestyle virtues will instantaneously transform your expectations of what a modern luxury vehicle should look and feel like. The attention from my Morganite painted ride — Arctic White Coachline — was momentarily exciting, but nothing I was clamoring for while cruising around the property and through the old medieval towns and villages of Southern France, where it is chill and laid back. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy guided me like a superyacht’s captain on clear waters while the powerful V12 delivered instant, purifying acceleration. The bonnet ornament is named after actress Eleanor Velasco Thornton and is probably the most recognizable automobile emblem today.

“Ghost Series II represents the fundamental tenets of Rolls-Royce — serenity, effortlessness, and elegance — distilled into an expressive, monolithic form,” stated Juliane Blasi, Head of Exterior Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Our clients asked for a design that would provide a stage for their Bespoke color and material choices, whether quiet and restrained or bold and expressive. In line with their requirements, Ghost Series II is characterized by meaningful refinements that enhance the motorcar’s standing as a potent canvas for creativity.”

Exterior Details and Architecture

The Ghost has always been a bold and assertive piece of machinery that initially gravitated toward younger and diverse enthusiasts. After each model iteration, Rolls-Royce explored further to tap into the mindset of this financially savvy consumer group. Thus, company visionaries and artisans enhanced Ghost with a surplus of personalization and character. Styling implementations to separate Series II from its predecessor include all-new headlamps and a lighting signature that utilizes a Distinct Horizon Line to connect each lamp to the grille. The front fascia is led by the illuminating Pantheon grille, featuring vanes that are smoother in section and incorporate a flush fit. They were originated to help direct air to the powertrain. Under the grille and lower bumper lies an aero-inspired blade that gives visual strength to support the grille.

My test car featured fully polished 22” wheels, which Roll-Royce describes as an interplay of elegant folding surfaces highlighting the robust 9-spoke arrangement. The larger wheels emphasize Ghost’s proportions without disturbing the silhouette. All-wheel steering and all-wheel drive increase traction and improve maneuverability. Of course, the rear-hinged automatically closing coach doors and the famed Rolls-Royce door umbrellas are key attributes of the Ghost Series II. Detailed by a polished color-tone handle and Rolls-Royce monogram, the umbrellas are clever rainy-day accessories.

A New Hue Dubbed Mustique Blue

In France, Rolls-Royce presented an entire fleet of Ghost Series IIs for the media to evaluate and test drive. The exterior color palettes were as bright and colorful as rainbows. Yet, one in particular is a new alluring hue anointed Mustique Blue. Since I love blue vehicles, I was in awe! Rolls-Royce can now add another variation to its collection of 44,000 shades and Bespoke Color Service, where owners can create personal hues. This metallic finish copies the tint and energy of the Caribbean Island it is named after. Rolls-Royce inserts mica and glass flakes into the mixture to produce a sparkle that mimics sunlight reflecting from sea waters. Mustique Blue pays homage to a throwback Rolls-Royce from 1929, the Phantom II Continental prototype. One of the first automobiles to use pearlescent paint created from fish scales, it was commissioned for the personal use of Sir Henry Royce.

Comforting, Intelligent Interior

The posh, Bespoke cabin of the Series II is creatively curated from hand-stitched materials, precious metals, advanced digitization, omnipresent illumination, and new fabric methods. For example, the richly grained Grey-Stained Ash is a natural open-pore wood finished by hand and highlighted with microscopic metallic particles for a shining effect.

Optional reclining Serenity Seating akin to a mobile spa, Champagne cooler, automatic folding picnic table, Lambswool floormats, illuminated treadplates, and the magical Shooting Star Headliner combine to give occupants memorable excursions. If you select the Ghost Extended Series II, 6.69” of additional rear space is provided. Regarding technology, a new choreographed interior illumination sequence energizes your mood; passengers can connect entertainment devices to the two rear screens, the intuitive SPIRIT operating system and Whispers private members app for remote vehicle management act as the brains of the vehicle, and eight shortcut tabs on the center stack handle various tasks like raising the Spirit of Ecstasy or operating Lane Assist.

Black Badge Ghost Series II Highlights

Black Badge is the ultimate expression of any Rolls-Royce selection, including the Ghost Series II. The premium label is the Double R’s alter ego, stimulating creative expressions when viewing while injecting performative attributes into the drive experience. In Aix-en-Provence, Black Badge Ghost Series II was in high demand. My model of choice was decorated in Jubilee Silver — Turchese Coachline — and featured the Dark Chrome Spirit of Ecstasy, exclusive 22” forged 7-spoke Black Badge rims, a two-tone Turchese steering wheel, and Black Badge Technical Carbon Fiber interior finish.

The Black Badge Ghost Series II is pristine inside and out and handles roads confidently due to Black Badge-specific suspension tuning and an increased 29-horsepower. Moreover, the 8-speed ZF transmission features a Low Mode that holds the gears longer for supplementary performance and throatier exhaust notes. Rolls-Royce further separates the Black Badge Ghost Series II from the standard model by darkening exterior elements, including the use of black chrome, such as exhaust tips, grille, wheels, window surround, and door handles. This package also features a unique lower grille and Black Badge-specific bumpers and air intakes.

Accessories to Accentuate Your Ghost: Rolls-Royce Luggage Collection

The Rolls-Royce Black Badge Escapism and Duality Luggage Collections make the ultimate statements for the discerning traveler who defies convention. Rolls-Royce borrowed the inventive Duality Twill textile from the interior of the Ghost Series II for its luxury travel bags. Offered in three hues — Lilac, Black Grey, and Chocolate — the rayon fabric is manifested from the bamboo groves at Le Jardin des Méditerranées, near Sir Henry Royce’s former winter home. The unique “Duality” pattern weaves the iconic ‘R’ initials of the co-founders with subtle nautical touchpoints to depict the splendor of the French Riviera while highlighting the interlacing rope lines found on the majestic sailing yachts that grace this body of water.

Meanwhile, the exquisite five-piece Escapism Luggage Collection embodies the rebellious spirit of the Black Badge line, created for innovators and trailblazers. It masterfully blends the finest leathers with a sophisticated technical weave inspired by the Cullinan Black Badge, guaranteeing elegance and durability. The collection offers eight striking leather color options in two distinct themes – Bold and Understated. The “Bold” variant features dramatic two-tone combinations, while the “Understated” option presents a refined all-black finish and slightly colored piping and stitching details.

Pricing and Ordering

Interested parties can order and specify their Ghost Series II at any Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA authorized dealers commencing at $355,000. The $420,000 Black Badge Ghost Series II amplifies the game by integrating above and beyond amenities. Interestingly, Ghost clientele typically set aside 10% of the vehicle’s purchase price for personalization upgrades to distinguish their pride and joy from the rest.

If your formula for memorable ventures includes defining exploration, haute cuisine, and expressive art, pay homage to Château La Coste during your next excursion to Southern France. Of course, the Ghost Series II is a must to enhance your day-to-day activities while rediscovering the rich culture and timeless energy of Aix-en-Provence. Enjoy!
