After a 44-year hiatus, the iconic Scout brand is making a triumphant return with two all-new electric off-road vehicles, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck. These rugged models take inspiration from the original Scout vehicles produced by International Harvester from 1961 to 1980, but they’re packed with 21st-century electric performance and off-road capability.

The Electric Comeback

Scout’s reentry into the automotive world isn’t just a nod to nostalgia. The Traveler and Terra are built on a proprietary body-on-frame platform, designed specifically for tough off-road conditions. Both vehicles will be all-electric, marking Scout’s transition into the EV market. The brand has revealed that the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup will have a driving range of up to 350 miles on a single charge. However, for those looking for even more range, an optional Harvester extended-range system—a gas-powered generator—will push total range beyond 500 miles.

Though Scout hasn’t released full specs yet, the performance figures teased are impressive. With an estimated 1,000 pound-feet of torque, both models are expected to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds. These numbers hint that Scout’s electric powertrains won’t sacrifice the brand’s legendary off-road capability for speed.

Trail-Ready Features and Off-Road Dominance

Scout is serious about its off-road roots, and the new Traveler and Terra will be equipped to handle the toughest terrains. Featuring a solid rear axle, front and rear mechanical lockers, and front sway bar disconnect, these vehicles are purpose-built for adventure. Both models boast over 12 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford nearly three feet of water.

To enhance their off-road prowess even further, the Traveler and Terra will be able to fit up to 35-inch tires, making them ideal for navigating challenging trails. And for those with towing needs, the Traveler will tow over 7,000 pounds, while the Terra pickup will haul more than 10,000 pounds. Both vehicles can handle nearly 2,000 pounds of payload, making them as practical as they are powerful.

Innovative Charging and Power Capabilities

As fully electric vehicles, the new Scouts are equipped with cutting-edge charging technology. They will use the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and offer up to 350 kW of charging capability, thanks to their 800-volt architecture. This enables rapid charging, ensuring you spend more time on the trail than at the charging station. Additionally, the vehicles support bi-directional charging, allowing owners to power tools, appliances, or even another vehicle.

The Scout Terra’s 5.5-foot bed includes two 120-volt outlets and a 240-volt outlet, making it an ideal mobile power source for camping or worksite applications. The Traveler SUV features an integrated spare tire carrier capable of holding a 35-inch tire, while the Terra offers a 33-inch spare underneath with an option for a bed-mounted carrier for those looking to go larger.

Retro-Inspired Interiors with Modern Tech

Inside, Scout is blending the past with the future. The interior design draws cues from the original Scout II, featuring tactile controls for climate settings located beneath a large central screen. Mechanical door handles add a nostalgic touch, and for those wanting a bit more old-school flair, the Terra will offer an optional front bench seat instead of a center console.

Scout’s focus on simplicity and functionality shines through in the overall interior design, making these electric vehicles feel like a natural evolution of their tough, utilitarian ancestors.

Pricing and Availability

Scout is keeping things accessible with starting prices in the low $50,000 range for the base models of the Traveler and Terra. Retail prices will start just under $60,000. While reservations are now open for just $100, potential buyers will need to exercise patience, as production is slated to begin in 2027.
