Ford has truly reignited the spirit of the classic street truck and lowrider minitruck scene with the recent unveiling of the 2025 Maverick Lobo. This performance-oriented version of their popular compact truck is a nod to the days when lowered trucks ruled the streets, capturing the essence of what made those vehicles so iconic.

The new Maverick Lobo is Ford’s answer to enthusiasts’ calls for a hybrid AWD version, expanding the Maverick lineup in a way that pays homage to the low-slung, customized trucks of yesteryear. Named “Lobo” (Spanish for “Wolf” and also the F-150’s moniker in Mexico), this version is all about street performance.

The Lobo sits 0.5 inches lower at the front and 1.12 inches lower at the back compared to the standard Maverick, with a stiffened suspension system that features monotube rear dampers borrowed from the Maverick Tremor, but specifically tuned for this model. Its roof height is reduced by 0.8 inches, and the 19-inch black “turbofan” wheels echo the design flair of the legendary Escort RS Cosworth, adding a retro touch that any minitruck aficionado would appreciate.

Performance-wise, the Maverick Lobo is packed with components from other Ford performance models. The front axle features dual-piston brake calipers from the Focus ST, while the quicker steering rack comes from the European Kuga (known as the Escape in the U.S.). The upper strut mounts and steering rack bushings are lifted from the Mustang Mach-E, and the enhanced cooling system borrows parts from the 4K Tow Pack, including a larger radiator, fan, and transmission oil cooler.

Ford has also introduced a special “Lobo mode,” designed to be used off public roads. This mode activates torque vectoring via a twin-clutch rear drive unit and relaxes the stability control system, making it easier for drivers to enjoy some spirited, sideways driving. It’s essentially the Maverick’s equivalent of the track mode found in the Mustang.

Under the hood, the Maverick Lobo retains the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine, which now produces 238 horsepower (down by 12 horsepower from the previous year) and 277 pound-feet of torque. Interestingly, this engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, derived from Ford’s European hot hatch models, rather than the standard eight-speed automatic or continuously variable transmission found in other Maverick versions.

The Lobo is not just about mechanical prowess; it also boasts distinctive cosmetic updates. The black roof, body-colored rear bumper and rocker moldings, and unique front fascia set it apart visually. Inside, Grabber Blue and Electric Lime accents add a pop of color to the sporty interior.

Pricing for the 2025 Maverick Lobo starts at $36,595 (including destination charges) for the base model, with a more equipped version available for $42,090. While only the higher-spec model is currently available for order, the base model will be available before the end of the year, with deliveries for both starting at the beginning of 2025.

Ford’s Maverick Lobo is more than just a truck; it’s a tribute to the street trucks and lowrider minitrucks that once dominated the scene, blending modern performance with a nostalgic nod to the past.
